Daily Devotionals

Tuesday 4 May 2004

Our 'Be Still' for today is taken from the Lawyers Christian Fellowship (UK) 'Word for the Week' by Christine John.

"The scoundrel's methods are wicked, he makes up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just.  But the noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands." Isaiah 32: 7-8

John Scriven wrote recently about calling.  In relation to the poor we are all called to do something.  Of course, we also are blessed by the Lord with our own special calling to be lawyers for Him, and where the two meet we are able to glorify God with our response......a response that demonstates God's character through His love of justice.

"You created everything, and it is for your pleasure that they exist and were created." Revelations 4:11

Our purpose is to live for His pleasure, in obedience, in response to His call and above all in love.

His response?

"The Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation." Psalm 149:4

Wednesday 5 May 2004

Acts 2:4

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit.

(God may use dramatic methods to work in our lives or He may use gentle whispers. Are we waiting patiently and listening?)

Thursday 6 May 2004

Acts 2:16

… this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: In the last days God says "I will pour out my Spirit on all people".

Friday 7 May 2004

Psalms 16:8-11

I saw the Lord always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices.

Wednesday 12 May 2004

Acts 2:38

Repent and be baptised everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

(Repentance = change of mind and a change of action. Am I depending upon Christ to help me truly repent ?)

Thursday 13 May 2004

Acts 2:46

They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people.

(Is my church the kind of place that will attract others to Christ? Real Christianity is a lovely thing.)

Friday 14 May 2004

Acts 3:6

Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."

(I may ask God for what I want but he may give me what I really need.)
