July 2001 Daily Devotionals Sunday 1 July Matthew 19:4-6 "Havent you read," "that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." Monday 2 July Matthew 19:8-9 "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." Tuesday 3 July Matthew 19:11-12 "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it." Wednesday 4 July Matthew 19:14 "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Thursday 5 July Matthew 19:17-19 "Why do you ask me about what is good?" "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments." "Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honour your father and mother, and love your neighbour as yourself." Friday 6 July Matthew 19:21 "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." Saturday 7 July Matthew 19:23-24 "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Sunday 8 July Matthew 19:26 "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Monday 9 July Matthew 19:28-30 "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first. Tuesday 10 July Matthew 20:1-16 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. "About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went. "He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing? "Because no one has hired us, they answered. "He said to them, You also go and work in my vineyard. "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first. "The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. These men who were hired last worked only one hour, they said, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day. "But he answered one of them, Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didnt you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. Dont I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous? "So the last will be first, and the first will be last." Wednesday 11 July Matthew 20:18-19 "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!" Thursday 12 July Matthew 20:21-23 "What is it you want?" "You dont know what you are asking," "Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?" "You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father." Friday 13 July Matthew 20:25-28 "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Saturday 14 July Matthew 20:32 "What do you want me to do for you?" Sunday 15 July Matthew 21:2-3 "Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away." Monday 16 July Matthew 21:13 "It is written," "My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers." Tuesday 17 July Matthew 21:16 "Yes," "have you never read, "From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise?" Wednesday 18 July Matthew 21:19 "May you never bear fruit again!" Thursday 19 July Matthew 21:21-22 "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, Go, throw yourself into the sea, and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." Friday 20 July Matthew 21:24-25,27 "I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. Johns baptism where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?" "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. Saturday 21 July Matthew 21:28-31 "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, Son, go and work today in the vineyard. "I will not, he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, I will, sir, but he did not go. "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. Sunday 22 July Matthew 21:32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. Monday 23 July Matthew 21:33-40 "Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. "The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. Last of all, he sent his son to them. They will respect my son, he said. "But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, This is the heir. Come, lets kill him and take his inheritance. So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. "Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" Tuesday 24 July Matthew 21:42-44 "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes? "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed." Wednesday 25 July Matthew 22:2-14 "The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. "Then he sent some more servants and said, Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet. "But they paid no attention and went off one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. "Then he said to his servants, The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find. So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. "But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. Friend, he asked, how did you get in here without wedding clothes? The man was speechless. "Then the king told the attendants, Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. "For many are invited, but few are chosen." Thursday 26 July Matthew 22:18-21 "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax." "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" "Give to Caesar what is Caesars, and to God what is Gods." Friday 27 July Matthew 22:29-32 "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead have you not read what God said to you, I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." Saturday 28 July Matthew 22:37-38 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. Sunday 29 July Matthew 22:39-40 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Monday 30 July Matthew 22:42-45 "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." 'If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" Tuesday 31 July Matthew 23:2-10 "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honour at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them 'Rabbi.' "But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.
