Daily Devotionals
Tuesday 9 July
Luke 12:54-57
“When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately
you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does. And when the south wind
blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. Hypocrites! You
know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it
that you don’t know how to interpret this present time? “Why don’t you judge
for yourselves what is right?
Wednesday 10 July
Luke 12:58-59
As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate,
try hard to be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the
judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw
you into prison. I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the
last penny.”
Thursday 11 July
Luke 13:2-5
“Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners
than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you,
no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who
died when the tower in Siloam fell on them — do you think they were more
guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless
you repent, you too will all perish.”
Friday 12 July
Luke 13:6-9
“A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and
he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. So he said to the
man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming
to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why
should it use up the soil?’ “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone
for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit
next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”
Saturday 13 July
Luke 13:12
“Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.”
Sunday 14 July
Luke 13:15-16
“You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath
untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then
should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for
eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”
Monday 15 July
Luke 13:18-19
“What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare
it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden.
It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches.”
Tuesday 16 July
Luke 13:20-21
“What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? It is like
yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked
all through the dough.”
Wednesday 17 July
Luke 13:24-29
“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door,
because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once
the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside
knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But he will answer,
‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ “Then you will say, ‘We
ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ “But he will
reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all
you evildoers!’ “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when
you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God,
but you yourselves thrown out. People will come from east and west and north
and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God.
Thursday 18 July
Luke 13:30
Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”
Friday 19 July
Luke 13:32-35
“Go tell that fox, ‘I will drive out demons and
heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’
In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day — for
surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you
who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed
to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,
but you were not willing! Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell
you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord.’”
Saturday 20 July
Luke 14:3 & 5
“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” “If one
of you has a son or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will
you not immediately pull him out?”
Sunday 21 July
Luke 14:8-11
“When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not
take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have
been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to
you, ‘Give this man your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to
take the least important place. But when you are invited, take the lowest
place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move
up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all your
fellow guests. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who
humbles himself will be exalted.”
Monday 22 July
Luke 14:12-14
“When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your
friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they
may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet,
invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed.
Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of
the righteous.”
Tuesday 23 July
Luke 14:16-24
“A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited
many guests. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those
who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ “But they
all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought
a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ “Another said,
‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out.
Please excuse me.’ “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t
come.’ “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner
of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly
into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled,
the blind and the lame.’ “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered
has been done, but there is still room.’ “Then the master told his servant,
‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my
house will be full. I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will
get a taste of my banquet.’”
Wednesday 24 July
Luke 14:26-27
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father
and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters — yes, even his
own life — he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross
and follow me cannot be my disciple.
Thursday 25 July
Luke 14:28-33
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he
not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to
complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it,
everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began
to build and was not able to finish.’ “Or suppose a king is about to go to
war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether
he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with
twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other
is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way,
any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
Friday 26 July
Luke 14:34-35
“Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can
it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure
pile; it is thrown out. “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
Saturday 27 July
Luke 15:4-7
“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one
of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after
the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts
it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours
together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I
tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over
one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not
need to repent.
Sunday 28 July
Luke 15:8-10
“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one.
Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she
finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbours together
and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same
way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God
over one sinner who repents.”
Monday 29 July
Luke 15:11-24
“There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said
to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided
his property between them. “Not long after that, the younger son got together
all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth
in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine
in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself
out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.
He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but
no one gave him anything. “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How
many of my father’s hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving
to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father,
I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be
called your son; make me like one of your hired men.’ So he got up and went
to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw
him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his
arms around him and kissed him. “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have
sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called
your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring
the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on
his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.
For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’
So they began to celebrate.
Tuesday 30 July
Luke 15:25-32
“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he
came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the
servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied,
‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe
and sound.’ “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his
father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look!
All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders.
Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.
But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes
comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ “‘My son,’ the father said,
‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate
and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he
was lost and is found.’”
Wednesday 31 July
Luke 16:1-9
“There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting
his possessions. So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I
hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be
manager any longer.’ “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do
now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m
ashamed to beg — I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people
will welcome me into their houses.’ “So he called in each one of his
master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
“‘Eight hundred gallons of olive oil,’ he replied. “The manager told
him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred.’
“Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’ “‘A thousand
bushels of wheat,’ he replied. “He told him, ‘Take your bill and make
it eight hundred.’ “The master commended the dishonest manager because he
had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing
with their own kind than are the people of the light. I tell you, use worldly
wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will
be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
Thursday 1 August
Luke 16:10-12
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be
trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be
dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly
wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy
with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?
Friday 2 August
Luke 16:13
“No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate
the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise
the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”
